Jenkin Lloyd Jones: Spiritual Ancestor

While the BCMC

is grounded by the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh,

we draw from many other worthy teachings.

JENKIN LLOYD JONES (1843-1918)

was a minister active in the Social Gospel Movement.

He was a key person in organizing the 1892 Parliament of World Religions,

bringing together religious and spiritual leaders from around the world.

We honor Jenkin Lloyd Jones,

a Spiritual Ancestor of the BCMC,

as Brother Michael, Parson of the Buddhist Christian Mother-Earth Church,

plays the role of Rev. Jones.

(PLEASE NOTE: Nearly all of the words spoken by Brother Michael in this podcast are either direct quotes or close paraphrases of Jenks’ own words and ideas. Many of his words are still timely and inspiring, but you will also find that Jenks was “a person of his times.” The purpose of this “interview” is not to give us a “curated image” of Rev. Jenkin Lloyd Jones, but, rather, to give us a full, rich, and honest one so that this ancestor of the BCMC may still serve to inspire us.)

 .

In 1893,

Reverend Jones wrote of his hope

that “the heart of Christendom” would open to Buddha and Confucius

and that Confucianism and Buddhism would

open themselves to “the spiritual loftiness of Jesus.”

(A Chorus of Faith, Chicago: The Unity Publishing Company, 1893, p. 15)

.

We in the BCMC will continue to do our best to

HONOR THE TRADITION of SACRED TRAILBLAZERS

like Rev. Jenkin Lloyd Jones

who have worked with Diligence, Integrity, & Love

at Bringing Together the Worthy & Beneficial Teachings

of Multiple Spiritual/Religious Traditions.
